Breast cancer is the most common cancer found in women. In the United States, about 1 in 8 women will develop breast cancer in their lifetime. Each year, more than 300,000 new cases are diagnosed, and sadly, over 42,000 women die from the disease. The good news is that when breast cancer is found early, the survival rate is nearly 99%. Taking care of your health now can make a big difference later. Here are some simple steps you can take: • Get regular checkups. Talk to your doctor about when you should start getting mammograms (X-ray pictures of the breast). Most women should start at age 40. • Pay attention to changes. Notice how your breasts normally look and feel. If you see or feel something different, tell your doctor right away. • Know your risk. Family history, age, weight, and lifestyle can all affect your risk. Ask your doctor what this means for you. • Live healthy. Staying active, eating healthy foods, and limiting alcohol can help lower your risk. • Speak up for yourself. If you don’t understand your test results, ask questions. Don’t be afraid to get a second opinion.
