PSI BE WELL NEWSLETTER ISSUE 05 / MAY 2026 WWW.HEALTHYWAY-PSI.COM MENTAL HEALTH MONTH Breaking Down the Mental Health Stigma May is Mental Health Month, a time to raise awareness and support for mental health. According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI), more than 1 in 5 adults experience mental illness each year. Despite the prevalence of illnesses and increasing recognition of mental health as a critical component of overall well- being, stigma remains a significant barrier to receiving treatment and support. NAMI reports that roughly half (52%) of adults with a mental illness go without treatment. The fear of judgment and discrimination often prevents individuals from seeking help. Increasing education and open conversations are key to reducing stigma and building a more supportive, compassionate society. Here are some tips for helping break the silence: Educate yourself and others about mental health and substance use disorders to better understand symptoms, treatments, and reduce misconceptions. Talk openly to normalize conversations and create a safe, judgment-free space for sharing and support. Use respectful, person-first language to avoid stigma and focus on the individual. Encou rage equal treatment of physical and mental health conditions. Speak up and offer support if someone may be struggling, helping guide them toward care. Taking these steps helps reduce stigma and fosters a more inclusive, supportive environment. Be Well Spotlight Message from the Health Coach Step into spring with mindful movement.
