NEWSLETTER ISSUE 07 / JULY 2026 WWW.HEALTHYWAY-PSI.COM UV SAFETY MONTH UV Awareness & Sun Safety Spending time outdoors can be great for your health and well- being, but protecting your skin from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays is important. One of the most effective ways to do this is to use the UV index, a daily forecast that measures the intensity of the sun’s UV radiation. Whether your job requires you to spend time outside, or you’re heading out for a walk, playing sports or simply running errands, knowing the UV index can help you time your exposure and take steps to protect yourself from sun damage. The UV index is reported on a scale from 0 to 11+, with each range corresponding to the average person’s risk level. The higher the UV index value, the greater the potential for harm from unprotected sun exposure. Children, older adults, and people with fair skin or certain medical conditions may be especially vulnerable to high UV levels. The UV index is a helpful tool that can guide your daily decisions and keep you protected from harmful UV radiation. Here’s how to use it proactively: Check the index in the morning . Many weather apps and websites display the UV index alongside the daily forecast. Take extra precautions when the index spikes. On days with a very high or extreme rating, minimize direct exposure and prepare accordingly with strong sun protection. Adjust your schedule when possible. If the UV Index is high (6 or above), plan outdoor activities for early morning and late afternoon or take extra precautions to protect yourself from exposure. Watch for environmental amplifiers. Sand, water and even pavement can reflect UV rays, increasing your exposure. Be Well Spotlight Message from the Health Coach CoreHealth is part of PSI’s 2026 Wellness Incentive . Medications can also lose effectiveness or even become unsafe after expiration, and heat and humidity can further degrade products that are already past their prime. When summer ailments or accidents strike, you want relief that works quickly and safely. The average American opens their medicine cabinet 468 times each year. However, nearly 3 in 4 people admit they often forget to replace their expired products. A cabinet check today ensures you’re prepared for common summer needs without lastminute store runs. Consider these 10 summer essentials: 1. Pain reliever and fever reducer 2. Antihistamines, nasal sprays and eye drops 3. Hydrocortisone cream for rashes and bug bites 4. Broad-spectrum sunscreen 5. Aloe vera or after-sun gel 6. Insect repellent 7. Oral rehydration packets or electrolyte drinks 8. Bandages and basic first-aid supplies 9. Antibiotic ointment for minor cuts 10. Longer days, sunny skies, warmer weather—it’s a treat after the cold months of winter! But sometimes that warm weather can get too hot to handle. And when it’s uncomfortably hot, working out might be the last thing we want to do. That makes it tough to stick with our health goals through the summer. Luckily, there’s a workaround! You don’t have to sacrifice your physical activity goals because of the weather. Here are a few exercises you can do to beat the heat and some helpful tips to stay cool. MORNING JOGS OR WALKS Before the day gets too hot, try taking a nice morning stroll or even a jog. It gets your heart pumping first thing in the morning and can even give you energy for the rest of the day. YOGA OR OTHER INDOOR WORKOUTS Look for indoor fitness centers that offer classes, yoga, or have equipment to stay in shape regardless of the weather. Don’t have access to a gym nearby? Home workouts can be just as effective and more convenient. SWIMMING OR WATER EXERCISE Swimming is an incredible workout and can be refreshing when the weather is scorching. Try water aerobics, swimming laps, or even walking in the water for low-impact movement to stay active. EVENING SPORTS Consider getting together with friends or family after work for some sport activities. Try a pick-up game or join an adult recreation league in the evenings for a fun way to wind down from a sunny day. MAKE MOVEMENT SAFE It’s important to stay safe regardless of which activity you choose. Make sure you take breaks as needed, wear appropriate clothing, catch some shade when possible, and drink plenty of water.
